COMMUNICATIONS GOAL

"Persuading others with respect to biblical and theological truth through oral, written and electronic media"
  • Goal
  1. I need to learn how to lead/teach in a small group setting
  2. I will facilitate my college small group at church
  3. I will lead the Chinese international UTD bible study at church
  4. I will disciple a college student (currently Jason W.)
  5. I will develop a closer sense of community among the Chinese UTD students
  6. I will teach in the college class at least once as well as preach once before I leave for the mission field with OMF
  • Strategies
  1. I will lead my assigned college group weekly
  2. I will lead the 1st year Chinese international student group weekly
  3. I will pray for my 2 bible study groups during my morning prayer
  4. I will invite the international students to my home for fellowship and deeper discussions
  5. In preparing for preaching, I will start in the college group, then speaking at the Wednesday evening prayer meetings
  • Resources
  1. I will read and study the passages to be taught and apply any small group materials the church/seminary have available
  2. I will work with my ministry mentor in working on my preaching skills
  3. I will discuss the progress of my group with my ministry mentor, fellow college ministry mentors and also Deacon Davis Wong, who is in charge of the Chinese International student ministry
  4. I will meet with the guys in my college ministry group to learn about their experience in the group
  • Measures
  1. I will attend all small group leader training (Training session with JR Vassar August 19, 2017)
  2. End of year survey for the college student
  3. For the Chinese international students, I can see how many still remain in the group at the end of the year, as attrition rate is historically very high (less than 10 come regularly)
  4. I will be evaluated on whether my point was received by speaking with the college minister (June 20, 2017)
  • Overall Reflection Statement for Communication
For my competence in communication, I am sumitting teaching outlines and photos which demonstrate my work and my participation in working alongside the college kids I teach
  • Artifacts
  1. Sample teaching slides and notes on discipleship with college group
  2. Photos/videos of ministry projects undertaken by college ministry group
  • Learning Reflection
As I developed and demonstrated communication ability, I learned  that proper planning on my part prevents poor performance of the team.  As the leader, it is up to me to manage expectations.  I learned that this does not come easily for me but I try to put myself in situations where I have to lead a variety of people.  Results can be easily observed at the completion of project, such as the counting the homeless in our assigned area of Dallas.  Leading is not easy.  Much patience and time is needed to lead well.
  • Lifelong Development Statement
As a result of the experiences documented by these artifacts, I will continue to develop in communications by volunteering to lead more.  Also, I learned that communication is complete only if what I am communicating is received correctly.  It is important for me to say what I mean and make no assumptions.
Worshipping together serving together
This is a service project our church's college group took park in.  It was with Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance, helping with the homeless count. The students from church was encouraged to have mentors serving alongside them
Stuffing our faces silly in Xi'an
We were able to cross some language boundaries to reach out to the 2 guys here.  Before we left Xi'an, we connected them to local fellowship
Here, we are having fellowship with a team of church leaders.  They did not speak English, so I had to encourage them through Mandarin.
